COVID POSTURE

What is COVID Posture? COVID Posture is a postural adaptation that many of our patients are exhibiting since COVID. In the last 6 months we are seeing more and more patients walking into the office who have severely rounded/forward shoulders and hyperlordosis/tight hip flexors. This type of posture has always been an issue for people who sit at a desk all day, but in the last 6 months it has dramatically increased.

Before COVID people went to work at an office. Yes they sat all day but throughout the day they would get up, go down the hall to get a drink or go to the bathroom. Maybe stop and stand and chat with a coworker for a few min, maybe walk to another floor to attend a meeting. Go to lunch and have to walk to the parking lot and back, these little breaks from sitting might not seem like much but when you take them out, your body will notice.

Now after COVID the same people are getting up from bed, sitting and having a bit to eat and within a few minutes they are chained to their desk for the rest of the day. With the exception of a few bathroom breaks and a 10 second walk to the refrigerator for lunch they are sedentary for 8-10 hours straight. And to make it worse now there is no after work activities, it is straight to the couch and watching TV for the rest of the night.

This “new normal” for most working American’s is leading to COVID Posture. A posture that is destroying not only ones spinal integrity but also impacting many peoples health and mental wellbeing. In an article from Healthline you can read about how “Tech Neck” is also becoming more of an issue since COVID as well.

Symptoms of COVID Posture

  • Forward Head Posture – Is your ear in front of your shoulder when looking from the side?
  • Forward Pelvic Tilt – Is your lower back curve too arched?
  • Headaches – Do you get tension headaches that start later in the day?
  • Middle back and shoulder pains – Does your upper back burn later in the day?
  • Radiculopathy – Are your hands or feet going numb?
  • Lower Back Pain – Does your lower back hurt when you stand up or first thing in the morning?

These are just a few of the symptoms that we see on a daily basis from the new COVID “Normal” work week.
