Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions
Once you go to a chiropractor, do you always have to go?

Depends on your health goals. If you just want to get out of pain or restore normal spinal motion, this usually only takes 4-6 weeks and at that time you can stop care until you have another episode. If you want to get out of pain, prevent degenerative osteo arthritis, balance your nervous system, and maintain optimal spinal motion, you should receive chiropractic care on a periodic basis throughout your life.  What is a periodic basis?  Research suggests that every getting adjusted every 2 weeks will keep your spinal joints moving and assist in maintaining optimal spinal health.

It is easy to understand that we should eat healthy, exercise and brush our teeth throughout our lives, and visiting your local chiropractor is no different. There is nothing that chiropractic care does which makes you dependent on it. You will want to receive chiropractic care because of the results it will have in your life.

Is getting adjusted by a chiropractor safe?

Chiropractic care is one of the safest things you can do for better health. In fact, chiropractors have the lowest malpractice insurance premiums over all other healthcare practitioners.

Does getting adjusted hurt?

Chiropractic care should be comfortable and, in most cases, feels good. Most people say, “I feel taller” or “I feel lighter,” after getting treatment. This is a result of the endorphins released with each adjustment and pressure being relived within the joints and muscular system.

Why does my orthopedic physician say not to go to a chiropractor?

This is due to a lack of understanding of what a chiropractor does. Orthopedic surgeons take joints that have moved past or out of their normal physiological range and surgically tighten them up.

Chiropractors take joints that are not moving through normal physiological motions and help free these joints up, restoring normal range of motion. Both professions have distinctive differences and should work together and do whats right for each patient.  This frequently asked question is why people often times think that Chiropractors and Medical doctors do see eye to eye.

Rob Hutchison, PA-C at Integrated Medical Services understands this and that is why we have him listed as one of our preferred orthopedic providers.

What are the causes of subluxation (misalignment of the spine)?

Physical stress: trauma from car accidents, work injuries, improper lifting, sports injuries, child birth, and slips and falls, are all common causes of traumatic-induced subluxation. Other physical causes are sustained postures like sitting in front of a computer all day, improper exercise, and poor sleeping habits (like sleeping on your stomach).

Chemical Stress: Poor diet, prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, illicit drugs, alcohol, smoking, and artificial sweeteners are just a few examples that can contribute to misalignment of the spine.

Emotional Stress: Negative thoughts, work and relationship stress, or lack of a balanced life can all contribute to subluxation.

Chiropractic Glossary of Terms

Adjustment: A gentle, specific, manual force that is applied by a doctor of chiropractic with the goal of repositioning a misaligned vertebra and restoring the normal bio mechanics of that joint. As a chiropractor, we are trained to correct a subluxation using the adjustment.

Pinched Nerve: Pinched nerves are when a nerve gets trapped by a bone, disc, or cartilage, causing inflammation, which usually results in numbness, tingling, burning, spasm, and weakness. Most pinched nerves resulting in pain or numbness in the arms or legs are a result of a subluxation in the spine. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and correct the subluxation causing a pinched nerve.

Sciatica: Pinched nerves coming out of the lumbar spinal region in the back (L4, L5, S1 nerve levels-sciatic nerve), usually caused by a subluxation of the spine. Pelvic misalignment can also cause spasm to the muscle which pinches the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatic pain that travels down the buttock and hamstring. True sciatic pain from a disc problem typically causes a burning pain down the back of the leg past the knee and into the foot. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and treat sciatic pain.

Subluxation: A chiropractic subluxation complex is a dysfunctional, bio mechanical spinal segment (lesion) that alters optimal neurological function, which can lead to neuromusculoskeletal and visceral disorders.

Vertebral Subluxation Complex is identified by:

  • a loss of normal position and movement of spinal vertebra
  • irritation to delicate nerve tissue
  • muscles that are either spasmed (tight) or atrophied (weak), resulting from structural imbalance and nerve irritation
  • localized inflammation and heat
  • degeneration occurring over time causing other organs and systems of the body to lose their proper function
