Dr. Hood’s February Health Tip
Dr. Hood’s February Health Tip: Improve indoor air quality for healthier living.
Studies continue to show the degree of toxins, pollutants and particulate matter is more abundant indoors than outdoors. What are these toxins? What brings them into the home? How can they be removed to impove indoor air quality? Answering questions such as these help to create an indoor living envirnment to improve and support health.
The NASA Clean Air Study was a project led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in association with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) in 1989, to research ways to clean the air in sealed environments such as space stations.
NASA has recognized some common indoor air chemicals: Formaldehyde, Nitrogen Oxide, Benzene, Xylene and Trichloroethylene. Some big names for some “bad chemicals”. All of these are a detriment to healthy living. Effects may range from problems with respiration, dizziness, headaches to being carcinogens and even life threatening.
Commonly used products contain many of these chemicals, such as air fresheners and plug-ins with fragrance, cleaning products, papertowels, manufactured furniture using wood, glues and fabrics, cosmetics, bedding (including pillows), and clothing.

What can you do? Being personally responsible for researching what is in the products you purchase is important. Look out for the following: “easy care fabrics”, “anti-anything” (wrinkle, fade, stain, etc.), “waterproof”, “stain resistant” or “color fast”. All these are treated with urea-formaldehyde resins.
Adding plants to the home to help filter these chemicals and add oxygen to the air can also help. Check out the best plant filters and make an investment to better indoor air quality today.
