Healing By The Power Of The Mind

Is it true that there is something as healing by the power of the mind? The mind is a very mysterious organ, and for everything we know about it, there is much more that we do not. Every one of us has heard about the placebo effect and how one can make themselves feel better just by the act of thinking that they are getting better.  But even with all of the studies done on the subject of placebo we are still not able to identify why this is, the one thing we do know is that it does work.

Placebo is an innocuous substance that has no effect on the body.  This can include sugar pills, saline shots, and others that have no real therapeutic effect. Placebos are used for research as the control which the modern-day medical treatments are tested against to see their efficacy.

The placebo effect itself has been researched and noted to have its own improvement in depression, headaches, and even degenerative meniscal tears. There is no scientific evidence to correlate the changes too besides the fact that when people believed they were getting treated or that they would get better they did.

One way researchers explain the placebo effect is talking about the brain using two different systems to process pain information coming from the nerves in the body. The one system is able to determine the pains location, intensity, and characteristics, this includes: burning, stabbing, dull, achy, etc. The other system is the one that pertains to the emotional aspect of pain. The system that makes us scream out “ouch”. The one way to counteract this system is by having positive emotions to help diminish the negative ones associated with pain.

With this information people with acute or even chronic pain are able to combat it with positive emotions. If you believe your pain is getting better or diminishing than you can actual help heals your body. Research has shown this with “sham surgery” on degenerative meniscal tears, which people with fake surgery saw just as much improvement in pain as those with actual surgery.

One of the techniques out there that specializes in this kind of thinking is Emotional Freedom Technique of EFT. EFT has been used to help things such as: anxiety, athletic performance, depression, pain and physical symptoms, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder “PTSD”, weight loss, and food cravings.
