Cervical facet syndrome

Cervical Facet Syndrome

Cervical Facet Syndrome is when there is numbness, pain, and muscle weakness, or tightness associated with the facet joints of the spine. These symptoms can affect different parts of the body due to the location of the facets and where the exiting nerve travels. With cervical facet syndrome the affects facets are in the neck and the referred pain will be in the skull, neck, shoulders, and even into the arms and hands.

When these facets become compressed due to:

  • Trauma
  • Whiplash
  • Falls
  • Degeneration
  • Arthritis

You will start to see the pain referral patter depending on the location.

  • C2/3 — Upper neck and back of the skull
  • C3/4 — Upper neck and base of the skull
  • C4/5 — Entire posterior neck and “shoulder” muscle area
  • C5/6 — Mid to lower neck and the top and back of the “shoulder”
  • C6/7 — Mid back and shoulder blade area

Chiropractic helps greatly with cervical facet syndrome and this pain because they are able to adjust the facets and take pressure off the nerve and help relieve the pain. Manipulation will also help prevent worsening of the symptoms in the future and help decrease future degeneration and decay.
