What is that tingling in my arm?

Ever asked what is that tingling in my arm? Ever noticed a it starting in your arm, hand, leg or foot that you either woke up with or flared up on its own? Wondering what caused it, will it get worse, and how do I get rid of it?

Numbness in the arm, wrist, hand, leg, foot, or toes is happening quite often today.  Most people believe the numbness is stemming from either the extremity but actually the root cause of your pain can be coming from your neck or back.  One possible cause of extremity pain can be from siting or computer work.   In which most necks are in a flexed in a position that can cause increase tension on the nerves that exit the back of the neck and can cause numbness down into your shoulder, arm, hand, and/or wrist.  This condition is called Radiculitis.   The same thing can happen in the lower back from chronic flexion and compression of the lower back that happens when we sit all day at the computer.   When you get numbness or tingling down your legs and feet this condition is called Sciatica.

The nerves that control your arm and hand exit your spine from the neck and upper back. The nerves that control your legs and feet exit your spine from your lower back and pelvis.  When there is an encroachment or increased pressure on those nerves, the nerve itself cannot function properly. This can cause not only numbness, but also a change in muscle tone in the arm or leg and stiffness in the joints themselves.  Without correction of this pressure the numbness can get worse and more severe over time.

Different levels of nerve encroachment will cause problems in different areas of your arm and or leg.  This is why when dealing with numbness it is important to take an x-ray to see where the cause of the pain may be coming from. If the cause of the problem is stemming from a neck or lower back vertebra that is out of alignment, then a licensed chiropractor may be able to help with the correction of the vertebrae and decrease tension/pressure on the nerve.  Often over time,  this correction will decrease the numbness in the arm or leg.
