What Can a Fish Tank Teach You About Health?

What Can a Fish Tank Teach You About Health?

So, what can a fish tank teach you about health? When we remodeled our office, we wanted to provide our patients with a relaxed healing environment, so we talked about adding a saltwater fish tank as a final touch. At first, we were only thinking about how it would add joy to the many kids that came in and the great natural tranquility it would provide to our massage table room. But a few months later we realized that the tank would provide us much more than just the visual stimuli. After a few months of fish dying and not doing well we answered the question, what can a fish take teach you about health!

You see, a salt water fish tank is a delicate ecosystem requiring a perfect balance of water temperature, salt mixture, light, algae, bacteria and other microorganisms that are necessary for these beautiful fish to live and flourish. This is no different than the ecosystem in which we live. Our bodies need clean air, good food, water, sleep and exercise so we can live in a state of wellness. My vision of health and wellness is that we use the same common sense with our own healthcare as we would with the fish in the tank.

If I asked you the question “I have sick fish in my tank, what is wrong?” You might respond with questions like, “Did you check the salt balance? What food are you giving them and how much?” Then you might ask “Is the water clean?” “Do they get enough light” or maybe “Are they stresses because people are tapping on the glass constantly?” In other words, you would look to their environment and ecosystem first and you would not assume that there is a problem with the fish’s heart, gallbladder, thyroid, brain chemistry, etc,

Hopefully now you are starting to see my vision of healthcare system based on health and wellness. Our current healthcare system is flawed in its philosophy; it does not address the ecosystem within our bodies and environment. Here at Reed Chiropractic we hope that every time you see the fish you will be reminded that health and wellness come from the environment in which we live in and we create within our own bodies’ ecosystem. Health is your “response-ability” and we are here to help your body adapt and live within an inherently unhealthy environment. It takes extra effort to make the right choices but the results in your quality of life will be immeasurable for you, your family and your friends.
