Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique
At Reed Chiropractic we use many techniques, we primarily use Activator Technique on our young patients and senior patients who require a light touch.
The Activator is a spring-loaded, hand-held mechanical adjusting instrument that provides a high-speed, low-force impulse at specific points to assist the Chiropractor in spinal and extremity adjusting. The device can deliver a controlled and reproducible impulse allowing for the Chiropractor to adjust gently with muscle guarding or inflamed joints. It is also useful on smaller joints of the extremities such as wrists, collar bones, ribs, etc. The design is made to produce enough force to move the vertebra/joint and cause no injury.
Chiropractors have been using instrument assisted adjusting since the early 1900’s shortly after the profession began. The current Activator adjusting instrument was developed by two Minnesota Chiropractors (Arlan W. Fuhr and Warren C. Lee). The design of the instrument was based off a dental impactor.
Chiropractors utilizing instrument assisted adjusting has become usual and customary in the profession. Techniques utilizing the Activator are taught in chiropractic colleges and as continuing education in re-licensing seminars.
The Activator has two advantages in instrument assisted adjusting. The first is the quickness of the tool so the body is less likely to tense up and resist the adjustment. This decrease in resistance adds to the effectiveness of the treatment. The second advantage is the instrument is localized as to not create additional twisting or bending in getting the joint to adjust.
Adjusting with the Activator can assists the Chiropractor in other spinal techniques such as Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson or other. The Activator Methods have been researched for over 20 years with greater than 25 peer-reviewed research papers pertaining to the effectiveness of the Activator instrument.
