WEIGHT LOSS WITH INTERMITTENT FASTING
Weight loss with Intermittent Fasting works!
A day doesn’t go by in our office where one of our patients asks us how to lose weight. And for the most part they all have a common story, they say I don’t eat much and I just keep gaining weight. They feel hopeless and lost and in the years past I would have told them a different solution than I do now. In the past I might have told them to eat 5-6 small meal a day as a way to increase their metabolism.
Well the research shows that this might not be the best advise. Now I will suggest trying intermittent fasting. And before I can speak any farther they all want to stop me and say “Isn’t fasting bad for you?” or “don’t I need to eat to maintain muscle?” and before they even here what the different types and theories of intermittent fasting are, they jump to the conclusion that fasting means starving yourself for weeks or months. This is not what I am suggesting. I am suggesting that you eat all of your food for the day in a 6 hour window. Y
ou pick either starting at breakfast time and eat for a 6 hour window or you start at lunch time and eat for a 6 hour window. Then you just drink water the rest of the 18 hours of the day. And that is considered the fasting time. So for example you can eat you first meal at 7 am and have a snack at 10 am followed by a hardy lunch around 1 pm. This seems to be the least preferred method as it is hard to skip dinner. Most people do better with skipping breakfast and starting with their first meal at noon and a snack around 3 followed by a hardy dinner at 6 pm. Many people state that they never feel like eating first thing in the morning anyways.
The beauty of this is that you body will start to not use sugar as its primary energy source anymore. It will start to tap into all the stored energy your body has stored up and convert fat into energy. As a added benefit of this besides weight loss is that fat is a much better energy source and it will eliminate any insulin resistance and blood sugar disorders like Type 2 Diabetes. The other benefits of intermittent fasting are as follows:
- Weight Loss
- Digestion will improve
- You will cleanse your entire body ie. less joint aches and pains
- Your immune system will function better
- Your skin will improve and look younger
- Reduce the effects of the normal aging process and feel younger
There is one other type of intermittent fasting that I will also suggest and that is called 5:2 fasting. This means that you will eat normally for 5 days a week and you fast for 24 hours 2 days a week. Again this one seems harder for many people but it is very effective and works. I suggest that you give all of them a try and see which one you like the best. And the beauty of intermittent fasting is that you can change at any time and mix it up. You don’t have to shoot for perfection you just need to be consistent and keep with it.
