7 MYTHS ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE

In this article we will discuss the 7 Myths about chiropractic care. Do you ever find yourself hearing a story or statement and then wondering whether it really was true or not?  It seems urban myths and legends can be found about any subject and any place on Earth.  Whether it’s the notion that owls are really intelligent or that bananas grow on trees, there’s a myth that exists for every walk of life.  Here are seven about chiropractors you may not have known were not true.

  1. Chiropractors are not real doctors.

Most people in the general public tend to jump to the conclusion that chiropractors are essentially highly skilled massage therapists.  This is, however, inaccurate.  Chiropractors must obtain a Doctorate from an accredited medical school or university and pass both national and state exams in order to obtain a license to practice.  They are skilled in many forms of therapy including health and nutrition and physical therapy.

  • You should only see a chiropractor if you are having back pain.

The benefits of seeing a chiropractor go far beyond experiencing back pain.  Seeing a chiropractor can help you develop better posture, improve nerve conductivity, relieve arthritis and joint discomfort, and provide relief for chronic pain, among other things.

  • There is no evidence that seeing a chiropractor is beneficial to your health.

There is plenty of substantial evidence that has been found by studies over the years to support the health benefits of chiropractic.  Many chiropractic patients report having a better mood and more positive view of their health, plus reduced chronic pain associated with aging and taker less prescription drug medication.

  • It costs too much to see a chiropractor.

This is also untrue of seeing a chiropractor.  Most services provided by chiropractors are extremely affordable and some insurance plans even incorporate chiropractic as a benefit because it is considered to be health and wellness maintenance.  You should never expect to pay more than a couple hundred dollars for a visit to the chiropractor, and even that is a really high estimate.

  • A chiropractic visit is very painful.

“Unless you are having some form of surgery in your back, having a spinal adjustment at your chiropractor’s office is really a pain-free experience,” said Dr. Holly Westbrock, a chiropractor in Eden Prairie, MN. “ Chiropractors generally do not rely on invasive techniques or prescription medications.  Instead they use a series of movements and massage techniques to correctly adjust the spine, often providing immediate relief to the patient.”

  • There is a lot of risk associated with chiropractic.

Because it is not an invasive form of treatment or relies heavily on prescription medications, chiropractic is considered one of the safest forms of medical treatment.  One myth you may have heard is that it makes you more prone to having a stroke, but there is no scientific evidence that supports that statement, and malpractice insurance rates for chiropractors are among the lowest in the industry.

  • Once you see a chiropractor you have to keep going back.

Chiropractic therapy is not necessarily addicting, but like exercising, the health benefits that one receives from a chiropractic visit are enough to make you want to include it as part of your normal routine.  The idea that a chiropractic visit will force you to return in order to maintain some newfound health status, however, is simply inaccurate.
