Are You Breathing Properly?

Most people do not realize they may not be breathing properly and what benefits they are missing out on. Are you breathing properly, if not here are some signs of improper breathing would be:

  • Breathing through your mouth
  • Frequent Sighing
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Noticeable breathing during rest

When you breathe properly you can actually lower your blood pressure, reduce stress and anxiety by lowering adrenaline and cortical and releasing serotonin which is a mood boosting hormone. You can also balance your sympathetic “fight/flight response” and parasympathetic “rest/digest”. People can also experience improved athletic performance, mental focus, and a boost in brain health.

To breathe properly first start by breathing through your nose, when breathing with your nose you actually breathe in nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps you maintain homeostasis, bronchodilator and vasodilator, and has antibacterial properties that helps neutralize germs and bacteria. By simply changing from breathing through your mouth to breathing through your nose you will start taking advantage of these benefits. The deeper and more quickly you breath the more constricted your blood vessels will be, which means less oxygen delivered to your tissues including heart and brain by breathing through your nose you are forced to breathe lightly which allows for more oxygen.

To know you are breathing properly a couple of times a day you should place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest between your pectorals. When taking in breathes through your nose make sure that your belly rises before your chest. After practicing this over time you will be able to perform exercising and other daily activities by breathing through your nose. It takes time and hard work but it is achievable.
